Romans 3:20

20 For by works of the law no human being [1] will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

Romans 4:2

For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.

Romans 4:4

Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due.

just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:

Ephesians 2:8-9

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Titus 3:5-7

he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
